Which cannabis flowers / cannabis varieties can be ordered in pharmacies in 2024?
Due to the change in the law on April 1, 2024, cannabis will no longer be classified as a narcotic in Germany. This means that the previous cultivation limits of 2.6 tons per year and the import limit of 25 tons per year will no longer apply . Companies can now, upon application, grow any quantity of medical cannabis in Germany and develop new varieties that can then be sold to pharmacies.
Since the new cannabis law came into force in March 2017, cannabis has been available as a medicine and could be prescribed by doctors on a narcotic prescription (BTM prescription). But which types of medical cannabis are available in pharmacies after the change in the law and how do you find the right type?
Since July 2021, German cannabis can be obtained through the Bfarm Cannabis Agency. Three companies in Germany grow the cannabis locally. These companies are Aphria, Aurora and Demecan. Cansativa is the only wholesaler responsible for distribution.
Medical cannabis flowers are a natural product whose concentration of ingredients can vary from flower to flower. If the genetics of the mother plant change, the concentration of ingredients also changes. Importers and wholesalers are allowed to fluctuate the values within narrow limits (according to the law), and there are also special permits for batches that deviate slightly beyond this. In addition, importers are not obliged to disclose the individual varieties or terpene profiles of the respective cannabis varieties, so that different varieties with different genetics can be hidden behind the same variety names for medical cannabis flowers.
